Abstract
In the present study, a model for volume fraction and/or particle size selection in a tri-modal metal matrix composite, produced by powder metallurgy route is presented. The model is an extension to the Tan and Zhang's model [M.J. Tan, X. Zhang, Mater. Sci. Eng. A 244 (1998) 80-85] previously offered for a bimodal metal matrix composite. Based on the model, it is possible to select the particle size and/or volume fraction of the reinforcements to get a uniform distribution of the particles in matrix. Experimentally, an Al-Al2O3-SiC tri-modal composite was fabricated through powder metallurgy route based on the selection procedure introduced by the model. The microstructure of the composite showed a uniform distribution of the reinforcements in the Al matrix.
