Abstract

The tensile properties obtained using an electrothermal mechanical tester (ETMT) and sub-scale specimens have been rigorously evaluated by comparing the results with those obtained using ASTM Standards over a controlled range of microstructures and temperatures (up to 300 °C) for both (α + β)- and β-processed Ti–6Al–4V. These comparisons of the ETMT results, including yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), Young's modulus (E), total elongation, and reduction in area, have been made for six different microstructures producing controlled variations in properties. It has been shown that the ETMT may be used to successfully measure yield and ultimate tensile strength for (α + β)-processed Ti alloys.
