Abstract

A new technique to control hot cracking with trailing impactive electromagnetic force during welding (WTIEF) was reported. The electromagnetic force of inductor consisting of flat coil and concentrator (FCC) and the strain of sheet caused by the electromagnetic force were simulated with the finite element analysis software ANSYS, while the mechanism of WTIEF was discussed. Experimental results show that the hot cracking can be suppressed by this technique. And the crack rate decreases with increasing voltage of capacitor and frequency of electromagnetic force applied. Simulation results show radial electromagnetic force of FCC near the high temperature region points at the center of the sheet. And the direction of its axial force is downward. The weld metal within brittle temperature range (BTR) is able to be compressed by the electromagnetic force, which is the reason for the effectivity of this technique to control the hot cracking.
