Abstract

New CeCuFeAlSi bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with large supercooled liquid regions (ΔTx, ΔTx = Tx − Tg, where Tg is the glass transition temperature and Tx is the crystallization temperature) and high glass formation ability (GFA) were developed. Both Fe and Si elements are very effective to improve the GFA and enlarge ΔTx of Ce-based BMGs. The ΔTx in the CeCuFeAlSi alloys reaches to 95 K and BMG rods could be prepared with diameters of 10 mm. In the CeCuAlFe alloys, Tg, Tx and ΔTx increase with increasing Fe content. The reduced glass transition temperatures (Trg = Tg/Tl, Tl is the liquid temperature) of the present alloys are about 0.5–0.6 and thus much lower than those of other base BMG systems with high GFA.
