Abstract

According to biomimetic theory, non-smooth surfaces with different shapes on 3Cr2W8V steel were processed by laser. The resistance to thermal fatigue of smooth and non-smooth specimens was investigated and compared. The non-smooth units manufactured by laser played an important role in inhibiting the crack initiation and propagation. Thermal fatigue resistance to non-smooth specimens, which was dependent on the shapes of the units, was superior to the smooth specimen. For the gridding and the stria specimens, the non-smooth units, which amounted to many dykes, had effectively terminated the crack propagation. However, the cracks of the concave specimen had to round the unit to propagate instead of being terminated by the units.
