Abstract
Graphene is a two dimensional metallic membrane. Deformations of the membrane, i.e. strains, and topological defects of the crystalline lattice, couple to the electrons in the same way as external gauge fields. The origin of these fields, and their effects on the electronic properties of graphene, are reviewed.
