Abstract

The phase diagram of the Y–Ni–Sn ternary system was constructed at 770 K (0 − 50 at.% Sn) and 670 K (more than 50 at.% Sn) in the whole concentration range using X-ray and EPM analyses. The interaction of the elements results the formation of ten ternary compounds at investigated temperatures: Y12Ni6Sn (Sm12Ni6In-type), YNi4.85Sn (CeCu4.38In1.62-type), Y2.9Ni7.9Sn4 (Lu3Co7.77Sn4-type), Y2Ni2Sn (W2CoB2-type), Y2Ni7Sn3 (Dy2Ni7Sn3-type), YNiSn (TiNiSi-type), YNi3Sn2 (HoGa2.4Ni2.6-type), YNi2.92Sn6.07 (GdNi2.67Sn5.44-type), YNiSn2 (LuNiSn2-type), and YNiSn4 (LuNiSn4-type).

► Y–Ni–Sn system investigated at 770 K (<50 at.% Sn) and 670 K (>50 at.% Sn). ► Four new ternary compounds were found: Y2.9Ni7.9Sn4, Y2Ni7Sn3, Y2Ni2Sn, and YNiSn4. ► The phase Y6Ni2Sn is absent at 770 K.
