Abstract
WC is an effective additive to improve the mechanical properties of Ti(CN)-Co/Ni cutting tool materials, such as fracture toughness and hardness, as well as sinterability. In this work, the microstructural evolution and changes in mechanical properties of TiCN-(TiW)C-WC-TaC-Co/Ni cermet alloys caused by the addition of (TiW)C are investigated. The core/rim structure is observed in a Ti(CN)-Co/Ni cermet both with and without a small addition of (TiW)C; the core disappears gradually with the increase of (TiW)C content. The addition of (TiW)C improves important mechanical properties, such as fracture toughness and hardness, and wear resistance under wet cutting condition.
