Abstract
► The growth style and the structure of TiAlN based coatings were altered by interlayers. ► Cr interlayer showed better diffusion to substrate compared with Ti interlayer. ► The coating on Cr interlayer performed better adhesion, and the hardness of TiAlN on Cr interlayer increases. ► Si element changed the growth style and the structure of the TiAlN coating.
