Abstract
⺠WSi2 has been found to be an effective sinter additive to TiB2. Compacts with near theoretical density were prepared with the addition of â¥Â 5% WSi2 by hot pressing at 1600 °C, 30 MPa. ⺠Hardness and fracture toughness of this composite were 25 ± 1 GPa and 5 ± 1 MPa.m1/2 respectively. Crack deflection and bridging mechanisms were responsible for high fracture toughness. ⺠With increasing WSi2 content the rate of weight gain decreased and the nature of oxidation observed was parabolic. ⺠This composite exhibits superior oxidation resistance as compared to other TiB2 composites with MoSi2, TiSi2, CrB2 and CrSi2. ⺠Excellent thermal shock resistance was observed in TiB2 + 15%WSi2 composites even after 800 cycles.
