Abstract
Making use of the fact that the experimental equilibrium temperature of the reaction, Al4C3 + 6Al3V ⇒ 3V2AlC + 19Al, is 1211 ± 1 K, we calculated the standard enthalpy of formation of the MAX phase, V2AlC at 298 K and then used heat capacity results to derive its thermodynamic parameters over the 300-1400 K temperature range for the first time. Based on this work, the temperature dependence of the free energy of formation of V2AlC is given by: ΔGf0 (kJ/mol) = (−192.5 ± 14.1) + 0.0284 T. The enthalpy of formation of V2AlC, from it elements, at 298 K, is −188,300 ± 14,100 J.
