Abstract

•The Ti40.83Zr40.83Ni18.34 I-phase bulk alloy was sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering.•The density of the bulk alloy was 5.83 g/cm3, and the Vickers Hardness is 7.03 GPa.•The compression strength and elastic deformation are 662 ± 50 MPa and 2.7 ± 0.1%.•The lowest value of friction coefficient is 0.40, shows a promise to the tribology field.•MA/SPS techniques can produce the large size I-phase bulk alloy with high performance.

The quasicrystalline alloy powders with the composition of Ti40.83Zr40.83Ni18.34 are prepared by mechanical alloying (MA) techniques, and the bulk part is obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. The structure, mechanical properties, friction and wear properties of the bulk part are investigated. The results showed that the structure of the bulk part is pure icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (I-phase). The Vickers Hardness of the bulk part is 7.03 GPa. The maximum compression strength, the elastic deformation and Young modulus is (662 ± 50) MPa, 2.7 ± 0.1% and (30 ± 3) GPa, respectively. The lowest value of friction coefficient is 0.40 at a normal load of 100 N, a sliding velocity of 10 mm/s, a sliding time of 10 min and an ambient temperature of 293.15 K.
