•V2O5 nanoparticles were fabricated by using low cost rice husk activated carbon as template.•V2O5 nanoparticles retained a discharge capacity of 229 mAh/g after 50 cycles.•A high capacity of 131 mAh/g was achieved at 15C (4.5 A/g).
Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) nanoparticles are fabricated by employing rice husk carbon as templates, and their application as cathode material for lithium-ion batteries is demonstrated. The material delivers a superior high rate performance of 131 mAh/g at current density of 15C (4.5 A/g). In addition, it exhibits a remarkable cycling stability. Thus, V2O5 nanoparticles are promising as a capable cathode material for high power lithium-ion batteries.
