Abstract

•Large magnetic entropy change (ΔSm = 11 J/Kg K) at 1.5 Tesla above 300 K is obtained.•The peak value of ΔSm is higher in disordered system.•Refrigeration capacity (RC) is unaffected by the quenched atomic disorder.

The magnetocaloric effect in Ni–Co–Mn–In alloys is studied at low magnetic field, across the first order magnetostructural transition. The Co doping at Ni site induces the large magnetic entropy change (ΔSmΔSm) above room temperature. The large ΔSmΔSm of 11 J/Kg K has been observed for disordered Ni1.81Co0.22Mn1.46In0.51 alloy at 337 K at an applied field of 1.5 Tesla. The influence of quench atomic disorder on the magnetocaloric properties of Ni–Co–Mn–In alloys has been studied. The atomic disorder significantly increases the peak value of ΔSmΔSm and decreases the peak width. The refrigeration capacity (RC) is almost unchanged with atomic disorder.
