Abstract

•We investigated phase diagram of the DyBr3–CsBr system.•In the DyBr3–CsBr system we found two stoichiometric compounds and two eutectics.•We determined eutectics composition by Tamman method.•We measured the specific conductivity of DyBr3–CsBr liquid mixtures.•The specific conductivity is indicative of octahedral DyBr63- complexes formation.

Phase equilibria in the DyBr3–CsBr binary system were established from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. This system exhibits two compounds, namely Cs3DyBr6 and Cs3Dy2Br9, and two eutectics located at DyBr3 molar fractions x = 0.102 (T = 862 K) and x = 0.579 (T = 795 K), respectively. Cs3DyBr6 undergoes a solid–solid phase transition at 724 K and melts congruently at 1086 K. Cs3Dy2Br9 melts incongruently at 891 K. The specific conductivity of DyBr3–CsBr liquid mixtures was measured over the whole composition range. Results obtained are discussed in term of possible complex formation.
