•One-dimensional Bi2WO6 microbelts have been successfully synthesized by simple electrospinning processes.•Formed fibers coefficient by electrospinning was proved and obtained: K = QU/dη.•The Bi2WO6 microbelts possess larger BET surface area and narrower band gap.•One-dimensional Bi2WO6 microbelts shows enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light (λ ⩾ 400 nm).

Bi2WO6 microbelts have been successfully synthesized by simple electrospinning processes. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first report about preparing 1D Bi2WO6 microbelts. TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET and UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra were used to characterize the belts. The results indicated that the width of belts was about 1.5 μm. And the surface structure of belts was consisted of Bi2WO6 nanoplates. Besides, the Bi2WO6 microbelts exhibited excellent visible photocatalytic property in the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB). Meanwhile, preparation of the photocatalyst using electrospinning was helpful for recycling. What is more, Formed fibers coefficient by electrospinning was proved and obtained (K = QU/dη). So, the work has a great application value in the future.
