Abstract
► Cr alloying have no effect on the toughness of C40 structured (Mo1−xCrx)Si2 crystal. ► MoSi2 nanocomposite coatings have a higher toughness than that of monolithic MoSi2. ► Suitable compressive residual stresses are beneficial to enhanced toughness.
