Abstract

The epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BaTiO3 bilayers were deposited on (0 0 1), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. All of the bilayers presented coherent ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties. Furthermore, a strong magnetoelectric (ME) effect at room temperature was approved, which strongly correlated to the film orientation. The ME voltage coefficients for (0 0 1), (1 1 0) and (1 1 1) oriented bilayers were around 140 mV/cm Oe, 105 mV/cm Oe, and 120 mV/cm Oe, respectively. These values were at least one order of magnitude higher than previous reported results, which mainly related to the good interface quality of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BaTiO3 bilayers and the small dielectric constant of BaTiO3 film.

► All the bilayer presented a strong ME effect and inherent ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties. ► The ME voltage coefficients of the bilayer is at least one order of magnitude higher than the similar structures. ► There exist an excellent interface coupling for (0 0 1) oriented LSMO/BTO bilayer than other samples.
