Abstract

An analytical tensile failure model for die-cast magnesium alloys is used to predict the tensile ductility of die-cast and sand-cast magnesium alloy specimens. The size and location of the porosity is measured on the fracture surfaces of die-cast AZ91 and AE44 and sand-cast AM60, AZ91 and AE44 specimens. The tensile elongation is predicted with an average error of 5.3%. The advantages and uses of this failure model to the modern die-caster are presented.

► Mechanical properties of three cast magnesium alloys are investigated. ► Alloys of different solidification conditions are investigated in this study. ► A previously published model characterizes the results with an average error of 5%. ► Advantages of the failure model to the modern die-caster are presented.
