The behaviour of Rayleigh and Sezawa surface phonons propagating in magnetic multilayers [Ni80Fe20/Au/Co/Au]10 on silicon substrate was studied by high-resolution Brillouin spectroscopy. The dispersion dependence of the phase velocity was determined as a function of wavenumber and the angular dispersion was tested. A simulation of the dispersion dependence was made by the finite element method and the results were compared with those of the experiment.
► The behaviour of Rayleigh and Sezawa surface phonons propagating in magnetic multilayers on the silicon support was studied. ► The dispersion dependence was determined experimentally and calculated and the angular dispersion was tested. ► Comparative analysis has indicated that the multilayered system can be approximated as a uniform material.
