Abstract
▶ The ternary carbide Cr2AlC is firstly synthesized from the Cr2O3-Al-Al4C3 sample by solid-phase self-sustaining combustion. ▶ The degree of Cr2AlC formation is improved by introducing additional amounts of Al and Al4C3 in the samples. ▶ The degree of Cr7C3 reduction by increasing Al4C3 content is not as effective as that by adopting additional Al. ▶ The optimum product with almost no secondary phase Cr7C3 was obtained from an Al-rich powder compact of Cr2O3:Al:Al4C3 = 3:7.5:1.
