Abstract
ⶠThermal diffusivities of combined coating and substrate (double layer) specimens were measured using the laser flash method. The thermal conductivities of the coatings were successfully derived from these using the response function method. The values obtained were in good agreement with the thermal conductivities measured directly from coatings separated from the substrates by diamond wheel machining, thus demonstrating the accuracy and reliability of the double layer method, as well as its usefulness for calculating thermal conductivities of coatings in cases where the coating is too thin or fragile to be removed from the substrate.
