Abstract

The magnetic properties of the Tb1−xLaxMnSi intermetallic compounds with x = 0 and 0.5 have been investigated by magnetization measurements in the high magnetic fields up to 13 T and in the pulse magnetic fields up to 35 T in a broad temperature range for the purpose to explain the influence of the substitution of Tb by the non-magnetic La on their magnetic and crystalline properties. The X-ray phase analysis and the metallographic analysis have shown: the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure and the tetragonal CeFeSi-type structure for TbMnSi and for Tb0.5La0.5MnSi, respectively. Both the compounds exhibit a complex low temperature behavior due to the interplay of exchange and crystal field interactions. The field-induced metamagnetic transitions appear at high magnetic fields in these compounds, the value of magnetization approaches the value of Tb3+ free ion and increases again without saturation. The magnetic dilution is reflected in diminution of the transition temperature and “saturation magnetization” in Tb0.5La0.5MnSi.
