Abstract

The heat treatment parameters of ZA84 magnesium alloy have been optimized using differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. With 335 °C, the time (48 h) required for maximum dissolution of precipitates has been obtained by carrying out the DTA of the alloy at different solutionising time (24, 48, 72 and 100 h). The solution treated samples have been aged at 180 °C for different time intervals (0–36 h) and the peak hardness values are obtained. The mechanical properties evaluated for the optimum heat-treated conditions are reported.
