Abstract

Substitution effects on glass forming ability (GFA) in a La-based alloy system have been studied. Fully amorphous La62Al14(Cu5/6Ag1/6)14Ni5Co5 alloy with at least 20 mm in diameter has been prepared by copper mold suction casting. It is found that reduced glass transition temperature and gamma value could be used to correlate with the critical size for forming bulk metallic glass (BMG) in the La-based alloy system. Thermal and mechanical properties of the BMG are studied. The low glass transition temperature, high thermal stability and exceptional higher GFA demonstrate that the BMG alloys become useful for both scientific and engineering applications.
