Abstract
It has been well established that hydrogen will react directly and reversibly with a large number of metals and alloys to form metallic hydrides. Extensive research has been done over the years to improve properties of these hydrogen purification and recovery media and in developing new compounds for this purpose. In the present study, the hydrogen uptake characteristics of mechanically alloyed titanium–vanadium–nickel have been studied. Thermal and composition data were obtained for the TiVNi system prepared by mechanical alloying at a ball-to-powder mass ratio of 10:1. It was found that this material would absorb up to approximately 1.0 wt% hydrogen at near ambient temperature and ambient pressure of hydrogen.
