Abstract

•A new design for the multi-layer absorber with impedance match.•The multi-layer absorber demonstrates asymmetric microwave absorption.•Uncover the correlation between electromagnetics and the absorber structure.

Microwave absorbers have been widely utilized in integrated circuits, yet most of them are single layer structure with homogeneous components. Herein we introduce a design for the multi-layer absorber with impedance couplings at interfaces, demonstrating asymmetric microwave absorption dependent on gradient dispersions of absorbents. Experimental and theoretical results at gigahertz, based on a simple system of Ni nanoparticles dispersed in paraffin matrix, verify our findings, providing the accessibility to such absorbers. This study has also important implications in understanding the correlation between the macroscopic electromagnetic behaviors and the configuration of multilayer absorbers.
