Abstract

•The carbon black (CB)/PTFE Janus beads were prepared with a microfluidic device.•Both the size and morphology of the microspheres can be adjusted.•The prepared beads are of electrical and color anisotropy.

Janus carbon black (CB)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microspheres with optical and electrical anisotropy were prepared by changing the CB dispersity in PTFE microsphere substrates using a simple microfluidic device with a single capillary. The narrow size distribution of the Janus beads (CV,<2%) could be controlled by adjusting the dispersed or continuous phase flow rates. The volume ratio of the CB hemisphere to the CB-free hemisphere in the Janus beads was also controlled by changing the CB content in the feed solution. The electro-responsive properties of the as-prepared Janus beads were studied in detail.
