•Zr- or/and Ti-doped ceria were prepared by sonochemical method with crystallite size of 8–10 nm.•Lattice parameter dependence on nominal metal content did not correspond to Vegard׳s law.•Zirconia addition led to more developed surface of ceria than titania addition.
Ceria-based nanopowders with a crystallite size of 8–10 nm have been prepared by sonochemical method using inorganic salts without any additives. In all cases, ceria-based materials have a mesoporous structure with pore diameter of 2–12 nm with bimodal pore distribution. Lattice parameter dependence of nanoscale solid solution on nominal metal content was not linear, that is, did not correspond to Vegard׳s law.
