Abstract

•Novel Fe-Co microclusters have been successfully prepared.•A facile hydrothermally method has been used.•The size of Fe-Co alloys cluster is about 2 to 4.5 μm.•The higher saturation magnetization of 197 emu/g with low coercivity of 117.5 Oe was obtained.

Fe-Co alloys of 2–4.5 μm diameters with microclusters morphology were synthesized using a facile hydrothermally method. The morphology and size of final products strongly depend on the reaction time and temperature. The microstructures and component of as-prepared samples were investigated in detail by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The formation mechanism of such novel Fe-Co alloy was discussed on the basis of controlled experiments. The magnetic properties were characterized by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The higher saturation magnetization of 197 emu/g with low coercivity of 117.5 Oe was obtained. Results from this study therefore suggest that Fe-Co microclusters could be applied in magnetic devices and other related fields.
