•Al/Ti-based glassy composite is obtained by a novel cold consolidated method.•A large size bulk sample is fabricated using powder metallurgy route.•The consolidated bulk samples have high strength and improved plasticity.•The samples fabricated by sintering exhibit strong wear resistance.•Al/Ti-based glassy composite may have applications under different conditions.
Al-based amorphous matrix composites enhanced with Ti-based glassy particles are fabricated using a cold hydro-mechanical pressing (CHMP) technique. The compacted glassy/crystalline microstructure and strong interface bonding caused by severe deformed densification of Al-based powders are responsible for high fracture strength and improved plasticity of composites. Furthermore the Al-based composite is also produced by high temperature sintering, which exhibits strong wear resistance during sliding. The Al/Ti-based amorphous composites prepared by powder metallurgy could exhibit various properties, which may have potential engineering application under different conditions.
