•Single crystal of tuAgN was synthesized at room temperature and the structure has been solved.•The multiple shot Laser damage threshold value of tuAgN was found to be 13.06 GW/cm2.•The tuAgN crystal could be used for any applications up to 435 K.•Microhardness at different planes of tuAgN show anisotropy.
New poly bis(thiourea) silver(I) nitrate (tuAgN) has been synthesized at room temperature (27 °C) and single crystals were grown by the slow evaporation method. Crystal structure was solved and the lattice parameters were obtained. The crystal shows good optical transparency (70%) in the entire visible region with a lower cut off wavelength of 329 nm. The tuAgN crystal has high laser damage threshold value of 13.06 GW/cm2 with better birefringence results. The tuAgN crystal exhibits good thermal stability of about 165 °C. The Vickers microhardness measurements carried out on (1 0 0) and (0 1 0) planes of the grown crystal shows considerable anisotropy.
