•The NLO properties of HBI in different solvents were investigated.•The NLO parameters of HBI are obtained.•The HBI exhibit the solvent-polarity-tuned NLO properties.
2-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl) benzimidazole (HBI) is one kind of organic molecules featuring excited state proton transfer (ESPT). The nonlinear optical properties of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzimidazole (HBI) in different polar solvents were investigated by the Z-scan technique. The experimental results show that the nonlinear refractive indices and TPA coefficient of HBI increase with the enhancement of solvent polarity. The optical nonlinearity obviously sensitive to the solvent polarity allows them to be potentially applicable for the amplitude manipulation of the optical nonlinearity.
