Abstract

•The pseudoelasticity in oriented polycrystalline Ni52Fe17Ga27Co4 alloy was studied.•A complete pseudoelastic recovery of 5% is achieved at 348 K.•Kinetics of the martensitic transformation is markedly affected by grain boundary.•Highly-oriented polycrystals are more industrially relevant than single crystals.

High-temperature pseudoelasticity was investigated in highly-oriented polycrystalline Ni52Fe17Ga27Co4 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. The pseudoelastic behaviors and the kinetics of the martensitic transformation are significantly affected by the intersection angle between the loading direction and the grain boundaries. For the intersection angle of 0°, a complete pseudoelastic recovery of 5% is achieved at 348 K. In contrast, only partial pseudoelastic recovery is observed for the intersection angle of 90°. At a constant pressure of 50 MPa, the martensitic transformation starting temperature increases from 346 K to 360 K as the intersection angle changes from zero to 90°.
