Abstract

•Amelioration of calcium phosphate toxicity by PEG coating.•Appropriate zeta potential for colloidal gentamicin delivery.•Enhancement of loading efficacy by PEGylation.•Sustanied release of gentamicin in 5 days.

Gentamicin sulfate (GS) is an antibiotic, used to treat many types of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by gram-negative organisms, not only through colloidal delivery system, but also in tissue engineering scaffolds. On the other hand, its short half-life necessitates its frequent administration in short time lapses. Here, we have developed poor crystalline carbonated hydroxyapatite submicron particles (PCCHSPs) loaded with GS through PEGylation which can increase the release time approximately till 5 days. The particles were characterized both before and after loading. This platform could be employed both in colloidal GS delivery system and as antibiotic loaded agent in fabrication of scaffolds.
