Abstract

The aim of this work is the preparation and properties of polymethacrylamide/Na-montmorillonite nanocomposites. These materials were synthesized from free-radical polymerization of methacrylamide and montmorillonite using benzoyl peroxide. Nanocomposites were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis. X-ray and thermal analysis confirmed intercalated structure of the new nanocomposite materials. The thermal decomposition temperatures of nanocomposites were found to be higher than that of pure polymethacrylamide and thermally degradation rate decreased. The morphology of the composites has been studied using scanning electron microscopy and the particle size distribution of nanocomposites was measured. Also, water uptake properties of nanocomposites were studied.
