Abstract
A special shielding gas apparatus was invented to produce a homogenous coating onto a magnesium alloy substrate for the purpose of renovation of porosity and scuffed (or damaged) areas on the surfaces of the magnesium parts in present study. The defect-free coating with fine and granular microstructure and good bond interface between the coating and the substrate has been acquired by optimizing YAG laser cladding parameters. The microhardness of the coating is much little than that of the substrate, and there is nearly no compositional alteration to the laser-clad coating compared with the original composition of the substrate.
