Abstract

•Coating formation rate depends on the energy released in microdischarges•Main reason of hard coating formation is its and adjoined substrate layer heating•Cathode voltage is an effective parameter to obtain films with desirable properties and minimal time•Coated alloy stationary potential helps to control its anti-corrosion ability

The kinetic aspects of the coating formation on the 2024 aluminium alloy at different time intervals of the microarc oxidation process (MAO) in an alkaline–silicate electrolyte under the AC current are investigated. Moreover the main reasons of modifications in the MAO coating properties (corrosion resistance, microhardness) and phase composition during the process are shown. Finally, non-destructive control methods of MAO coating properties are worked out.
