Abstract

The starting materials of Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles were agglomerated into sprayable feedstock powders and plasma sprayed to form nanostructured coatings. There were net structures and fused structures in plasma sprayed nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings. The net structures were derived from partially melted feedstock powders and the fused structures were derived from fully melted feedstock powders. The nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings possessed higher hardness, bonding strength and crack growth resistance than conventional Metco 130 coatings which were mainly composed of lamellar fused structures. The higher toughness and strength of nanostructured Al2O3–13 wt.%TiO2 coatings were mainly related to the obtained net structures.
