Abstract
Ni–Ti–Si ternary metal silicide coatings were fabricated on AISI 304 stainless steel by laser cladding process. The coatings consisted of Ni16Ti6Si7 primary dendrite and interdendritic Fe–Ni–based solid solution γ and exhibited excellent abrasive and adhesive wear resistance under high temperature metallic dry sliding wear conditions. The excellent wear properties were attributed to the high hardness and covalent dominant atomic bond of the metal silicide Ni16Ti6Si7. The dominant wear mechanism of the coating were delamination of the coating and material transfer from the mating surface.
