Abstract
The nanomechanical properties of commercially pure titanium treated by the surface mechanical attrition treatment have been investigated by nanoindentation and nanoscratch measurements. The decreasing grain size produced by this surface nanocrystallization method using random plastic deformation leads to significant increases in hardness and scratch resistance. The top nanostructured surface layer presents also a much better friction property than that of the titanium matrix.
