Abstract
We have investigated the Ga–Pd(110) system by means of soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction, and tested its chemical properties by co-adsorbing CO. On adsorption on Pd, the Ga 3d and 2p3/2 core levels showed small shifts with respect to metallic Ga, and the density of Pd 4d states below the Fermi level was reduced. The Ga–Pd surface alloy exhibited a (1 × 2) structure. The presence of gallium reduced the CO saturation coverage and bond strength in comparison with clean Pd(110).
