Abstract
We shortly remind the history of the crystal undulator concept and the key points of its development. A ”first principle” approach to simulation of crystal undulator radiation is described and applied to both electron and positron cases. We suggest the possibility to considerably improve the crystal undulator functioning by increasing the positron capture into deep channeling states using a crystal cut or a buried oxide layer.
