Abstract
Both the origins of a newly discovered effect of charged particle multiple volume reflection (MVR) from different skew atomic planes of one crystal and its impact on crystal applications in high energy physics are addressed. We demonstrate that high scattering intensity and reasonable crystal orientation requirements make the MVR effect in one crystal the most suitable tool for “crystal collimation” at the stage of LHC upgrade in channeling as well as random scattering modes. Results of the first-principle simulations of radiation accompanying the MVR effect in one crystal are presented. We also suggest to facilitate particle beam collimation and increase radiation emission by combining MVR in one crystal with channeling in the field of a bent skew plane.
