Abstract
The microstructure of the joints formed by vacuum reactive brazing of aluminium to aluminium-based composite, with a copper interlayer was investigated. Al–Cu eutectic (Al2Cu + Al) was the predominant phase at the interface. The maximum shear strength of the joint was 85 MPa. The results show that reactive brazing with a Cu interlayer can be used successfully for joining aluminium and aluminium-based composites reinforced with alumina borate whiskers.
