Abstract

Organo modified fluorohectorite (OFH) polyethersulfone (PES) nanocomposites were successfully developed by OFH dispersion in PES matrix. The dispersion of OFH in PES was investigated using different techniques such as attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of thermal, mechanical and contact angle measurements of OFH PES nanocomposites were found to be enhanced significantly by the incorporation of OFH into the PES matrix. The corrosion resistant properties of clay polymer nanocomposite (CPN) coatings were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potential measurements (OCP) and water adsorption test. These experimental results showed that the corrosion protection effect of OFH PES nanocomposite coatings were superior to that of pure PES.

► OFH PES nanocomposites were developed for high performance applications. ► The hydrophobic, mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were studied. ► OFH PES nanocomposite coatings showed superior corrosion protection than pure PES.
