► The synergistic effect of Laponite RD and oil soluble surfactant in stabilization of miniemulsions is investigated ► Stable oil-in-water miniemulsions are obtained with droplet size of 225-300 nm and monomodal droplet size distribution ► Nanocapsules are formed after evaporation of the volatile core component ► Laponite RD provides mechanical and electrostatic stabilization to the oil droplets
