Abstract

4′-substituted monobenzo-15-crown-5 (SB15C5)-bentonites are prepared from Na-bentonites by 4′-hydroxymethylbenzo-15-crown-5 (HMB15C5), 4′-methylbenzo-15-crown-5 (MB15C5) and benzo-15-crown-5 (B15C5). Their structure characteristics, stability and adsorption properties for naphthalene and 1, 1, 2, 2-Tetrachloethane (TCE) from water are studied. The observed basal spacing increases (ΔdL), ranging from 4 to 8 Ǻ, indicate that SB15C5 can complex with Na+, lying flat or tilting between the layers. Different substituted groups of B15C5 affect the stability of the SB15C5-bentonites. Adsorption isotherms of naphthalene and TCE to SB15C5-bentonites are linear. Thus it could be explained as a partition process.
