The main aim of the present paper is focused on reviewing various aspects of modern numerical modelling techniques used during the development of new metalforming operations dedicated e.g. to manufacturing lightweight components. Since modelling of metal forming processes requires detailed descriptions of material properties in various length scales, a particular emphasis is put on the development of the material models. Rheological models are discussed in three major groups with different level of complexity: conventional closed form equations, internal variable models and multi scale models. The application of the inverse analysis for the purposes of model parameters identification is also addressed within the paper. Finally, selected successful applications of the mentioned models in the development of innovative manufacturing metalforming operations are presented.
