Abstract
The coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of an n×nn×n matrix are derived in terms of the eigenvalues and in terms of the elements of the matrix. The connection between the two expressions allows the sum of the products of all sets of kk eigenvalues to be calculated using cofactors of the matrix.
